1,2-propylene glycol is a colourless, odourless, sticky liquid with sweetness. Propylene glycol is miscible with water, alcohol, either and may other nitrogen or oxygenous aliphatic compounds with low molecular weight as well as with dimethyl ketone and chloroform, but partially miscible with substances of non-polarity such as halogenated hydrocarbon. It is also the solvent of some medicine, spices, water-solubility dyes and colophony and coal tar. The freezing point of propylene glycol with water decreases noticeably with the increase in propylene glycol content.
Chemical Property
1,2-propylene glycol is a typical dualistic alcohol, which is used in the reaction of normal alcohols and form ramifications such as ester, acetal and ester, etc. Propylene glycol is steady in atmospheric temperature. But oxidation reaction is easily produced and the stability changes to poor when it is heated up to 150C or higher.
Usage
1,2-propylene glycol is mainly used for producing important raw materials of unsaturated polyester resin, alkyd resin plasticizer, ink additive, hydraulic liquid and release agent. It can replace glycerol as humidifier, food flavouring agent and medicine solvent, etc. In addition, it is applied in automobile antifreeze and de-icing fields. Propylene glycol is also widely used applied in plastic industry as it is an important intermediate to produce unsaturated polyester resin, epoxy resin, urethane resin and compound plasticizer, etc.
